Congress vows to block controversial FCRA amendment, accuses government of targeting NGOs

Congress intensified its resistance to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill 2026, with AICC general secretary KC Venugopal declaring the proposal unconstitutional and designed to target minorities and NGOs. He warned that the party and allied opposition will block the bill if it reaches the floor, urging the government to keep its plans private. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the opposition and announced a meeting of opposition floor leaders to finalize tactics.

Venugopal also demanded a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding accusations of pellet-gun, lathi and tear-gas use against student protesters in Delhi. The party has issued a whip for its MPs to attend the final days of the Monsoon Session, recalling past suspensions that allowed key legislation to pass with minimal opposition. Regional leaders, including Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma, have raised concerns, while other opposition figures such as Supriya Sule and MK Stalin have called for the bill’s withdrawal.
