Court summons Meerut couple over planned burqa-clad Kanwar pilgrimage
A Sambhal SDM court issued notices to Tamanna Malik and her husband Aman Tyagi after police warned that her planned Kanwar Yatra in a burqa could disturb public order.
An SDM court in Sambhal ordered Tamanna Malik and her spouse Aman Tyagi to present themselves before the bench after the Asmoli police chief warned that Malik's intention to undertake the Kanwar Yatra in a burqa might spark law-and-order problems. Both were placed under a six-month personal bond of Rs 20,000 each as a preventive measure. The couple is expected to explain the rationale for the attire, which officials fear could lead to a breach of peace.
Malik, who previously walked the pilgrimage for five days in 2025 and posted videos of the burqa-clad Kanwar, maintains that completing a pair of kanwars is a religious necessity. Her husband contested the court's action, asserting that everyone has the right to practice their faith without interference.
