Critics say Liberal government’s summer spending lacks clear detail and accountability

A recent analysis by Desjardins deputy chief economist Randall Bartlett shows that the Liberal government has committed over $40 billion in new spending for the next ten years, based on announcements made since the spring economic update. Bartlett highlighted that the breakdown of funding responsibilities among federal, provincial, Crown corporation and private sources is often unclear. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s spokesperson, John Fragos, declined to confirm Bartlett’s figures but emphasized that detailed line-by-line data will appear in the fall budget and the spring statement.

Conservative finance critic Michael Chong criticized the Liberal administration as the least open in recent memory, warning that the added outlays could worsen already rising deficits and calling for House of Commons and Parliamentary Budget Officer review. The government argues that rapid action is needed to address volatile global economic conditions, and that its new capital budget framework improves transparency for Canadians.
