CTU President Promises to Gather Signatures for Mayor Johnson's Re-Election

Stacy Davis Gates, the head of the Chicago Teachers Union, announced she will personally work to collect petition signatures for Mayor Brandon Johnson’s upcoming re-election campaign. She highlighted Johnson’s record of allocating a billion dollars to Chicago Public Schools, arguing that the city has not fared better under his leadership. The CTU played a decisive role in Johnson’s 2023 victory, spending more than $2.6 million on his campaign and joining other teachers’ unions in contributing over $6 million.

Critics contend that Johnson’s policies are overly influenced by the union, while Johnson denies any undue dependence. The union’s political activity occurs amid a severe enrollment decline, rising costs, and a demanding contract agenda that includes wage hikes and extensive social-justice provisions. The upcoming 2026 election will see all 21 seats on the CPS school board chosen by voters, ending the mayor’s appointment power.
