Curiosity Rover Captures Vast Field of Polygonal Fractures on Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover has photographed an extensive area of honeycomb-shaped polygonal fractures while climbing the Valle Grande valley on Mars.
While ascending the Martian valley dubbed Valle Grande, NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a panoramic view revealing a sea of honeycomb-like polygonal fractures spanning the horizon. The features, ranging from 4 to 8 cm in size, also contour the sides of the 6-meter-tall Miraflores butte. Ashwin Vasavada, the mission’s project scientist, described the sight as breathtaking and noted that detailed measurements and chemical analyses are underway to determine their origin.
Possible formation mechanisms include desiccation cracks in ancient mud, repeated heating-cooling cycles, or compression of water-laden sediments. This finding joins a series of notable observations—such as sulfur crystals, meteorites, and organic molecules—that have shaped our understanding of Mars’ watery past and its potential to have supported microbial life. Curiosity, built and operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA, continues to explore the foothills of Mount Sharp, where evidence of ancient lakes and streams has been documented.
