Daily avocado intake may modestly cut heart disease risk in obese adults

A six-month study found that eating one avocado each day lowered LDL particle counts, translating to an estimated 4% reduction in cardiovascular risk for adults with obesity.

In a randomized trial involving 786 adults with abdominal obesity, participants who added one avocado to their usual diet each day experienced a 49-nanomole per liter decline in LDL particle concentration over six months. This reduction is linked to an estimated 4% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the study published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. The effect was uniform across demographic groups and occurred without changes in weight or waist size.

Lead author Janhavi Damani emphasized that a single, manageable food change may be more feasible than overhauling an entire diet. Co-authors noted that earlier controlled studies also showed avocado-related LDL improvements, and the current findings confirm benefits in real-world eating patterns. Researchers advise individuals to consult health professionals before altering their diet.
