Deadly July blaze in Almería sparks survivor activism and climate worries

On July 9 a fast-moving forest fire engulfed the villages of Bedar and Los Gallardos in Almería, resulting in 14 fatalities and the evacuation of more than 1,500 people. Among the dead were five British visitors, and a close friend of survivor Sally Chapman remains hospitalized. After escaping to the nearby village of Lubrin, evacuees received shelter from locals, while church bells and a civil guard officer warned residents to flee.

Chapman now heads a local residents' group pressing political parties to establish protocols that could prevent a repeat of the disaster. Ferran Dalmau, an expert with the Spanish Ministry of Interior and a volunteer with the Forest Fires Assessment and Advisory Team, explained that heatwaves are intensifying fire risk across Europe, with recent blazes in France, Greece and central Spain merging into larger infernos. He estimated that the area burned could reach up to 80,000 hectares and that firefighting costs alone may exceed $900 million. The incident highlights the mounting threat of climate-related wildfires to communities throughout southern Europe.
