Defense asks judge to let accused CEO killer appear in civilian clothes

Luigi Mangione’s lawyers have petitioned a federal judge to permit him to wear civilian attire for his upcoming court appearance in New York.

Ahead of a status conference on Aug. 11 before New York Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro, defense attorneys for Luigi Mangione have asked U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett to order the Bureau of Prisons and the Metropolitan Detention Center to accept civilian clothing for Mangione’s appearance. The request, filed by Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Marc Agnifilo and Jacob Kaplan, lists a suit, shirt, socks and shoes without laces, and also seeks permission for the same attire during transport to the courthouse.

Mangione remains in federal custody at the Brooklyn detention facility and has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2024. The filing indicates that Justice Carro and prosecutors have not opposed the motion, describing it as a routine procedural matter. This petition is part of a broader pre-trial strategy that includes disputes over media access and attempts to livestream portions of the trial, which prosecutors have contested as misleading.
