Delhi consumer commission fines Mercedes-Benz India and dealer for hidden car billing

A Delhi consumer commission ordered Mercedes-Benz India and its dealer T&T Motors to each pay Rs 5 lakh after finding they concealed a prior sale of a new Mercedes E220d and failed to correct the purchase date in official records.

In a case before the Delhi consumer commission, a purchaser of a Mercedes-Benz E220d learned that the vehicle’s first registration date was recorded as July 25 2018, months before his December 12 2018 purchase, because it had previously been invoiced to a different customer whose booking was cancelled. The buyer sought clarification, but neither the authorised dealer T&T Motors nor Mercedes-Benz India corrected the record or disclosed the prior billing.

The commission, led by President Monika Aggarwal Srivastava and members Rajender Dhar and Ritu Garodia, concluded that both entities committed unfair trade practices: the dealer for issuing an inaccurate invoice and the manufacturer for not updating its software. Each was ordered to pay Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the buyer, and Mercedes-Benz India was instructed to amend its software to reflect the correct purchase date.

Why it matters

The ruling highlights consumer-rights enforcement against hidden vehicle histories and pressures manufacturers to maintain accurate sales records.
