Delhi crash kills 70-year-old woman; driver accused of speeding and drinking

A 70-year-old woman died after a Mercedes collided head-on with a WagonR in Narela, trapping her between vehicles, and police arrested the driver, Subham Sharma, who family says was speeding and intoxicated.

In the early morning on a narrow stretch of road in Narela, Outer Delhi, a Mercedes-Benz driven by 27-year-old Subham Sharma collided head-on with a WagonR owned by Narendra Kumar. The crash forced the WagonR backward into a stationary three-wheeler near a wall, where 70-year-old Urmila Bhardwaj, who was feeding birds, was caught between the two vehicles and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Witnesses reported the Mercedes was traveling at high speed and the driver appeared to lose control; a video showed a beer bottle inside the car.

Police arrested Sharma after locals handed him over, confiscated an empty liquor bottle and a beer bottle, and sent his blood for alcohol testing. The case was lodged by Geeta Verma, the WagonR driver’s wife, under sections 281, 285 and 106(1) for rash driving, obstruction and causing death by negligence. Sharma, the son of a Haryana Police sub-inspector, is unemployed and owns the car though its registration remains untransferred.
