Democratic candidate Adam Hamawy tours Michigan to back DSA-backed challengers

New Jersey Democratic congressional candidate Adam Hamawy is scheduled to visit Michigan ahead of Tuesday’s primary, where he will endorse State Rep. Donavan McKinney’s bid to replace Shri Thanedar and Abdul el Sayed’s challenge to Rep. Haley Stevens. Accompanying him are DSA-backed Colorado victor Melat Kiros and two political staffers from Senator Bernie Sanders’ circle, as well as socialist streamer Hasan Piker, who is focusing on el Sayed’s race.

While Hamawy stresses his military service and disavows any ongoing contact with extremist figures, his earlier testimony for Omar Abdel-Rahman and a 1994 humanitarian trip with the Benevolence International Foundation—later designated a terrorist front—have resurfaced. The DSA is mobilizing its network to aid the Michigan campaigns, viewing the state as a pivotal front in the broader leftward push within the Democratic Party.

Critics note that incumbent Shri Thanedar has fallen out of favor with establishment Democrats, potentially easing McKinney’s path. Hamawy’s presence adds both political firepower and renewed controversy to the contests.
