Democratic candidate Kirill Basin, 40, was arrested after a chaotic episode on Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei, where he blasted music and shouted at beachgoers. A confrontation with a large tattooed man escalated into a fight; the man delivered a knockout punch before Basin regained consciousness. According to witnesses, Basin then threatened beachgoers, claimed to possess a gun, and produced a knife that police later retrieved from the ocean.
He faces two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and has been ordered to post $1 million bail. This arrest follows a May incident in which Basin allegedly pointed a gun at two Maui County workers during a protest at a government building in Wailuku. Basin is challenging Rep. Jill Tokuda for the Hawaii 2nd congressional district seat. He previously posted on Instagram alleging police torture, a claim that has not been substantiated.
