Democratic congressional hopeful Sean McCann earns up to $50K from rental units flagged for code violations

State Senator Sean McCann, the Democratic candidate for Michigan’s Fourth Congressional District, derives an annual rental income reported between $15,001 and $50,000 from two Kalamazoo properties owned by McLam Properties LLC. One of the units failed a city code inspection in January, cited for fire-safety issues including crowded gas heating units, an expired extinguisher, and missing detectors, and required four months to remediate.

The second property was issued at least 11 violations in August 2024, ranging from dangerous electrical systems to missing carbon-monoxide detectors, with some infractions lingering for 17 months. McCann has championed the Tenant Empowerment Package, a bill that would force landlords to address hazardous conditions within 48 hours, yet the cited violations were ultimately fixed within the timelines mandated by current law.

His campaign spokesperson emphasized compliance with Kalamazoo ordinances and positioned McCann against Rep. Bill Huizenga’s alleged luxury-condo profits. McCann defeated Diop Harris in the primary by more than 30 points, positioning him as a key target for the DCCC in its effort to flip the district.
