Democratic educator pivots to new Florida district after DeSantis redistricting

First-time candidate Pia Dandiya moved her congressional bid from the 21st to the newly drawn 22nd district following Governor Ron DeSantis’ map changes and is now gearing up for the August primary.

Governor Ron DeSantis’ mid-decade redistricting in Florida dismantled the 21st congressional district where educator Pia Dandiya had launched a challenge to Republican incumbent Brian Mast. The map changes forced Dandiya to relocate her campaign to the newly created 22nd district, an open seat that Democrats see as a key opportunity to flip the House. She will compete against attorney Kaysia Earley in the August 18 primary, and has attracted high-profile backing, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue program, state Democratic chair Nikki Fried, Congresswoman Lois Frankel, the Florida AFL-CIO and pro-choice group Emily’s List.

Dandiya, a first-generation American and former White House education fellow, has raised more than $2 million and is touring a district that now stretches from densely populated coastal communities to agricultural inland areas, a configuration described as “Frankenstein” and labeled “leans Republican” by Sabato’s Crystal Ball. Despite the steep learning curve, she emphasizes her teaching experience and commitment to addressing everyday concerns of families across the diverse district.
