Democrats seize Knox County commission and school board seats previously held by Republicans
Democrats won a Knox County commission seat and a school board seat that had been under Republican control.
On Thursday, Knox County, Tennessee, saw two local offices turn Democratic. Brandon Huckaby defeated Republican nominee Sheri Super for the District 3 commission seat, a post previously held by Republican Gina Oster, who had been unseated in the GOP primary by 11 votes. In a separate race, Brandy Jenkins won a reliably Republican seat on the South Knox County school board, a result reported on August 6.
The outcomes provoked sharp rebukes from MAGA-aligned users on X, including Dr. Joseph Ford Cotto, who called the flips "pathetic" and blamed Republican absenteeism in non-presidential elections. Commentators linked the changes to record Democratic turnout across the state and to district maps drawn in 2021. Russell Drew noted Knox County’s strong support for Donald Trump, suggesting the November contests could be unpredictable, while Project Liberal co-founder Joshua Reed Eakle warned that the upcoming elections may be "wild."
