Detained Salvadoran man dies after medical emergency at New Jersey ICE center

Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old Salvadoran who was deported in 2006 and re-detained after a June arrest in Plainfield, New Jersey, died on August 1 following a medical emergency while held at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark. Staff from the GEO Group, which operates the center, and on-site medical teams transferred him to University Hospital, but officials have not yet released the cause of death. An autopsy is pending.
