Detained Salvadoran man dies after medical emergency at New Jersey ICE center
Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old Salvadoran who was deported in 2006 and re-detained after a June arrest in Plainfield, New Jersey, died on August 1 following a medical emergency while held at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark. Staff from the GEO Group, which operates the center, and on-site medical teams transferred him to University Hospital, but officials have not yet released the cause of death. An autopsy is pending. State officials, including Governor Mik, have been notified of the incident.
