Dog breeder perished in Gann Fire after refusing to abandon her German Shepherds

Susan Solari, a longtime breeder of German Shepherds operating under the name Hinterland German Shepherds, was killed when the Gann Fire engulfed her home near Angels Camp. Neighbor Joan Wilson said Solari screamed that she would not evacuate as flames closed in, insisting she could not leave her dogs behind. Wilson warned firefighters that Solari remained behind a locked gate with the animals, but law prevents officials from forcibly removing residents in such disasters.

Fire crews later discovered Solari's body inside the house on Jaquima Drive, while the fire was reported as 40% contained with ongoing containment and mop-up work. If the death is officially attributed to the blaze, it would mark the first wildfire-related fatality in California this year. The incident underscores how personal attachments can affect evacuation choices during wildfires.
