Sean Duffy, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, revealed a reality-style series titled The Great American Road Trip in May, promising a July premiere that would coincide with a presidential celebration. The five-episode docuseries was financed through Great American Road Trip Inc., a nonprofit that received $1 million contributions from firms including Boeing, Toyota, Shell, United Airlines, the U.S. Travel Association, Chase Travel and Royal Caribbean Group—companies overseen by Duffy’s agency.
Despite the initial hype, the program never aired and related social-media activity has faded, suggesting the project is stalled. The arrangement drew swift backlash over perceived impropriety, which Duffy dismissed as attacks from “the radical, miserable left.” In response, Senator Patty Murray requested an inspector-general probe, and the watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington lodged a formal complaint alleging improper gift-seeking.
