Driver with decades of bans pleads guilty after fatal Yolla motorcycle crash

In a Burnie Supreme Court hearing, Grant Andrew Crawford admitted to dangerous driving that resulted in the death of Retnakumar Kuppusami and grievous bodily harm to Suresh Rajakumar during a December 15, 2023 incident on the Murchison Highway. The crash occurred after Crawford, driving a stolen Holden wagon, attempted to speed through a roadwork zone, struck a worker's vehicle twice, and broke through site gates before colliding with a towed trailer carrying the motorcyclists.
Witnesses described Crawford fleeing the scene without assisting the victims or contacting emergency services; he turned himself in four days later. The court was presented with a 43-page dossier of prior convictions, amounting to more than 18 years of driving bans and several prison terms, which the judge called among the worst she has seen. Justice Tamara Jago noted the lack of evidence that Crawford has ever changed his behavior and scheduled sentencing for August 20.
