Drone footage shows dolphin mother carrying dead calf for six days in Indian Ocean

Australian conservation group Geographe Marine Research posted drone footage of a dolphin called Fraggle carrying her dead two-week-old calf through the Indian Ocean for six days. The mother’s pod, consisting of 14 individuals, remained alongside her, with other dolphins observed joining the procession. Scientists pointed out that the calf exhibited a high breathing rate before it died, a pattern often associated with the harsh conditions of winter births that can cause respiratory problems.

Fraggle has previously lost four calves, a fact noted in the video’s description. The clip quickly spread online, prompting viewers to share heartfelt comments about the apparent grief. Researchers cite comparable post-mortem behaviours in dolphins and other cetaceans, suggesting strong social bonds may drive such actions. The footage adds to a growing body of evidence that some marine mammals display mourning-like responses to loss.
