EL PAÍS appoints María Sánchez Díez as deputy editor of U.S. edition

EL PAÍS editor Jan Martínez Ahrens has appointed María Sánchez Díez as deputy editor to head the newspaper’s United States edition, a move aimed at strengthening its Spanish-language coverage for the country’s large Hispanic population. Sánchez Díez, a Madrid-born journalism graduate and former senior a editor at one outlet, also spent several years at one outlet overseeing operations and audience strategy during major events such as the pandemic and the 2020 election.

Her earlier work includes award-winning climate reporting and investigative projects that earned Pulitzer and Ortega y Gasset honors. The U.S. edition, launched in May 2024, targets more than 60 million Spanish speakers and combines one outlet's reporting with a local focus in states like California, Texas, Florida and Washington, D.C. The expansion aligns with PRISA’s broader strategy to grow EL PAÍS’s footprint across the Americas, supported by a global network of over 400 journalists.
