Elaine Chow, wife of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, used a social-media post to showcase bipartisan commendations from Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, who praised her father James S. C. Chao after he received an honorary doctorate from the Maine Maritime Academy. The post, made weeks after McConnell’s June hospitalization, omitted any reference to his health, fueling speculation about his status. Chow also highlighted her own recent activities, including a pre-planned trip to Shanghai for an honorary doctorate at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and an award from the Aero Club of Washington.

Her spokesperson reiterated that the China trip was scheduled long before her husband’s illness. On Capitol Hill, communications director Stephanie Penn was confronted by reporter Desiree Townsend about the continued payment of McConnell’s staff and whether a recent disaster-declaration letter bore his signature or an autopen. The Senate office offered no comment on McConnell’s condition, and the Daily Beast has not received a response from his team.
