Elderly Pontardawe resident left unsupervised after carer receives three-month jail term
An 81-year-old woman in Pontardawe can no longer be left alone after her carer, Louise Harris, was sentenced to three months for abusing her on camera.
CCTV footage showed carer Louise Harris verbally assaulting and threatening 81-year-old Elizabeth Anne Shipton in Pontardawe, leading to a three-month custodial sentence. Harris, a recovering alcoholic, had consumed a bottle of vodka, ripped apart the victim’s knitting and brandished a kitchen knife after an emergency alarm was triggered. Tracy Faram Shipton, Elizabeth’s daughter, described the punishment as "laughable" and said her mother now must never be left alone.
The Crown Prosecution Service withdrew an earlier attempted robbery charge, which would have allowed the family to appeal the sentence, and informed the victim of the decision. Police were required to break down the door to intervene. Elizabeth’s husband John died in December 2025, and the family had installed the surveillance system originally to monitor him.
