Electric cars may outperform gasoline models in India's monsoon floods

Engineers say electric vehicles are less vulnerable to flood damage than petrol or diesel cars because they lack air-intake engines that can suffer hydrolock.

As monsoon rains turn city streets into temporary lakes, the common belief that electric cars will fail first in floodwaters is being challenged by automotive engineers. Petrol and diesel engines rely on air intake; when water infiltrates, it can cause hydrolock, bending components and leading to expensive repairs. Electric vehicles, by contrast, use sealed motors and lithium-ion batteries housed in robust aluminium or steel casings that comply with IP67 or IP68 waterproofing standards.

Their battery-management systems can instantly isolate high-voltage circuits if a fault is detected, minimizing shock hazards. Nonetheless, experts warn that prolonged submersion can damage cabin electronics, brakes, and charging ports in any vehicle, and advise against charging a submerged EV until inspected. The discussion gains urgency as India’s climate shifts toward more intense, short-duration rain events, while EV adoption rises across the country.
