Electric emergency aircraft promises faster rural medical response

Jump Aero’s electric plane, Pulse, aims to reach remote patients in under eight minutes, cutting response times compared with helicopters.

Jump Aero has spent seven years creating Pulse, a fully electric aircraft shaped like a lunar lander that can take off, fly, and land within eight minutes over a 2,800-square-mile area. Its four shock-absorbing landing points let it touch down on rocky roads or backyards, bringing a medic equipped with life-saving tools directly to patients in rural locations. Co-founder Carl Dietrich says the plane’s rapid deployment could halve the time it takes to deliver oxygen and other care, while director Clint Harper notes its quiet battery operation is welcomed by communities.

The piloted vehicle allows a standing pilot to navigate and drop off a medic who stays with the patient until an ambulance arrives, and future versions may return autonomously. Jump Aero seeks roughly $50 million to complete the project, targeting a market price of $1.8-$2 million, cheaper than many helicopters, and hopes to field the aircraft within a couple of years.
