Elijah Bieniemy arrested after shooting mother following dispute over firearms

Elijah Bieniemy was taken into custody on charges related to the shooting of his mother, Mia, after he called police about his parents withholding his guns.

According to police documentation, Elijah Bieniemy phoned law enforcement on July 24, alleging his parents were confiscating his weapons and insisting he give them up to remain in the house. He also made delusional statements about being a UFC fighter and his ability to assist in emergencies. On July 26, his mother, Mia Bieniemy, was shot at their Ashburn, Virginia residence and sustained critical injuries, later being transferred out of the ICU.

Elijah, 27, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, using a firearm during a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. A request for a mental health competency assessment was granted, delaying his initial court appearance. His public defender noted significant mental health concerns that may impede his participation in his defense. Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been absent from team duties since the incident.
