Elijah Bieniemy's court date postponed pending mental competency assessment

Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was taken into custody on Monday after a shooting that injured his mother, Mia, who was struck in the chest and arm. He faces charges of malicious wounding, using a firearm during a felony and firing a gun inside a residence. His court-appointed lawyer filed two motions, one for a mental-health competency evaluation, which the judge approved, and another for a broader mental-health assessment, which was temporarily withdrawn.

Consequently, the judge set the preliminary hearing for September 9, pending the evaluation. Mia was hospitalized but is now reported as stable and out of intensive care, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. No timeline has been given for Eric Bieniemy's return to his coaching duties, and the hearing will occur just before the Chiefs' opening game of the 2026 season.
