Emilio Gay exits Durham One-Day Cup match with shoulder injury

England opener Emilio Gay left Durham's One-Day Cup game against Middlesex after a right-shoulder problem forced him to retire hurt on eight runs.

While facing Middlesex, Gay felt discomfort in his right shoulder and, after playing an on-drive off Toby Roland-Jones, summoned the team physio. Following a brief treatment, he withdrew from the field, ending his innings at eight. Durham will conduct a further assessment over the weekend. The 26-year-old, who is not contracted for The Hundred, has featured in five of Durham's matches in the competition and remains in England's expanded 16-man squad for the upcoming Tests against Pakistan.

Why it matters

The injury sidelines a potential England Test player just before a high-profile series against Pakistan.
