EPA's Omaha Lead Cleanup Falls Short as New Tests Reveal Ongoing Soil Contamination

The EPA spent $273 million over two decades to excavate and replace soil in roughly 14,000 yards across east Omaha, touting the effort as the nation’s largest residential lead remediation. However, recent soil analyses by Flatwater Free Press and one outlet reveal that about 10% of properties flagged as “remediated” still contain lead above the agency’s original 400 ppm limit, and almost a quarter would qualify for further action under newer, stricter standards.
Researchers note that the EPA’s practice of cleaning only sections of yards allowed nearby unremediated parcels to remain sources of contamination, potentially spreading lead dust during windy, dry conditions. City officials have begun retesting individual complaints, but broader follow-up testing and systematic reviews remain limited. Residents like Mary Royers and Brenda González Rocha report continued exposure worries, especially for children, while the EPA says additional investigations are pending and a new site study is slated for release in October 2027.
