Europol busts three suspects linked to Syrian migrant-smuggling rings
Europol announced the detention of three individuals suspected of leading Syrian smuggling networks that moved over 900 migrants into the EU.
Europol disclosed that coordinated raids in Germany and Serbia led to the capture of three suspected senior figures in Syrian-run migrant-smuggling operations. The detainees include a 26-year-old Syrian arrested in Germany, a 31-year-old Syrian taken into custody in Belgrade, and an additional suspect held in Serbia’s capital. Authorities allege the two interconnected networks have organized the illegal passage of over 900 migrants into the European Union since 2022, using sea crossings from Libya and the overland Balkan route.
The crackdown comes amid heightened scrutiny after more than 70,000 migrants stormed the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco last week. Europol’s statement emphasized the targeting of senior members to disrupt the broader smuggling infrastructure. The arrests underscore ongoing challenges Europe faces in managing irregular migration flows.
