Experts urge parents to avoid water beads amid severe health hazards

Health professionals warn that colorful water beads can cause intestinal blockages, choking and other serious injuries if swallowed or inserted.

Water beads, marketed for décor and sensory therapy, pose a hidden danger because their bright appearance can be confused with sweets. When a bead is swallowed, it expands dramatically, potentially blocking the intestines and causing severe pain, vomiting, dehydration and, in extreme cases, the need for surgery. An 8-year-old in Texas experienced a blockage that cut off brain blood flow, resulting in lasting speech and mobility issues, with neurotoxic chemicals in the beads possibly worsening the injury.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Buffalo Games have recalled more than 50,000 activity kits after reports of injuries and deaths. Medical experts, including an ICU nurse and a GP, stress that the beads are hard to detect on X-ray and can also damage nasal or ear tissue, recommending that households with children avoid them entirely and seek urgent care if exposure is suspected.
