Experts warn against shucking corn in stores, cite waste and safety risks

Etiquette specialists say shoppers should avoid peeling corn ears before purchase, recommending they wait to shuck until home.

As fresh summer corn returns to markets, a debate has resurfaced over whether consumers should peel the husks before buying. Etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore tells shoppers that if they do shuck in the store, they must purchase the ear and discard any bad ones in the designated bins, otherwise they should refrain to avoid mess and waste. She notes that husks protect kernels from dirt and bacteria, and early shucking can lead to moisture loss and faster sugar-to-starch conversion, reducing sweetness.

Ohio farmer Lee Jones emphasizes that every corn component—from silk to husk—has culinary uses, discouraging needless disposal. Food writer Lisa Lin and horticulturist Toni Salter suggest evaluating corn by weight, firmness, silk hue, and husk integrity rather than peeling. Finally, Everyday Health recommends keeping unshucked corn cool, covered, and washing it before consumption.

Why it matters

Shucking corn in stores can cause food waste, hygiene issues, and mislead buyers about quality.
