Exploratorium reinstates two-hour mask rule for vulnerable visitors

On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Exploratorium will enforce a mask mandate for all guests and employees between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., allowing only N95, KN95 or KF94 respirators. The short-duration, mask-required slot is designed to offer immunocompromised visitors a more protected experience, with attendance limited and complimentary masks supplied. Museum staff cite a recent uptick in COVID-19 transmission across the Bay Area, reflected in higher viral concentrations detected at regional sewage treatment plants since late July.

Rachel Hyden, senior director of visitor engagement, said the museum’s internal committee regularly seeks ways to exceed legal requirements and create inclusive options. All exhibition spaces, including the summer show “Life in Space,” will remain accessible during the early session, after which normal hours resume without a mask requirement.
