Explosion ignites five-alarm blaze in Bronx apartment building, two critically hurt

At about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a powerful explosion occurred on the third floor of a five-story apartment block located at 374 E 209 St in the Bronx, setting the building ablaze. The fire quickly spread to the second floor, prompting a five-alarm response that saw roughly 270 FDNY firefighters battling the blaze for more than an hour. Authorities confirmed two individuals were critically injured while three others sustained injuries but are in stable condition.
Nearby residents reported hearing a noise comparable to a bomb and watching the building burst into flames. One commuter, Lisa Landin, recounted the sudden, “crazy” explosion as she was returning home by bus. The situation is still developing as officials continue to assess the cause and damage.
