Extreme erosion forces closure of Point Dume Beach road, parking and restrooms

Following severe erosion triggered by recent high tides and surf, Los Angeles County officials closed the primary access road, parking lot and restroom amenities at Point Dume Beach. The Department of Beaches and Harbors said the overnight erosion left the bluff edge unstable, creating drop-offs as deep as eight feet in some spots. Consequently, Westward Beach Road past the pay gate and the 373-spot parking lot, the sole vehicle route to the beach, were blocked.

Damage to the water line and meter also forced the shutdown of several restrooms, prompting the placement of temporary chemical toilets and hand-washing stations. Beachgoers have been asked not to cross safety cones, caution tape or barriers for their own safety. The county is currently evaluating the damage and will issue updates, but no reopening date has been set. Recent National Weather Service warnings about strong surf and rip currents have already led to thousands of lifeguard rescues along the coast.
