Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, questioned why terrorist violence targets migrant workers whenever his party seeks the restoration of statehood for the region. The attack, which took place at a brick kiln in Kulgam district, killed two men in their twenties from Chhattisgarh, identified as Deepak Ratray and Bopinder. Abdullah said the circumstances of the killings are unclear and demanded a fair probe to hold those responsible accountable.
The incident follows a protest in Delhi on July 20 calling for statehood and a recent shooting of police head constable Ashiq Hussain in Anantnag. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti described the murders as a security lapse, calling for a high-level inquiry and compensation for the victims' families. Both leaders highlighted concerns about security gaps despite the presence of army, CRPF and police forces in the area.
