Father vows water-safety program after son dies in West Mersea beach tragedy

On July 22, a family outing from Barking to West Mersea, Essex, turned tragic when a powerful tide dragged Shahin Ahmed, his seven-year-old son Musa Ahmed, a teenage cousin and her mother into the sea. The cousin and her mother were pronounced dead at the beach, while Musa was rescued, air-lifted to the Royal London Hospital and succumbed on July 28. Three additional relatives were taken to hospital and are now recovering.
Shahin Ahmed described feeling helpless as waves repeatedly pushed him back despite his attempts to save his family. Bystanders, including Craig Bowe who made multiple rescue attempts, assisted, but the incident has spurred calls for more signage and life-jacket provisions, with local councils promising new warnings. Ahmed announced he will establish a programme to teach young people first aid and water safety to prevent future losses.
