Fire engulfs Utah apartment building, prompting mass evacuation and shelter assistance

Around 7:50 a.m. on Friday, flames were spotted at the North Union Apartments, a 223-unit complex in Utah, leading Unified Fire Authority to order the evacuation of 220 occupied units and their pets. Witnesses, such as long-time resident Carlos Flores, described the scene as frightening while others, like Sutton Bowers, helped fellow tenants retrieve cats and essential belongings. By 8:45 a.m., the fire had grown, with smoke pouring from the roof and trash chute, though the exact origin of the blaze is still unknown.

The American Red Cross established a temporary shelter at the north end of Hillcrest High School, serving lunch to roughly 200 displaced residents. All occupants were accounted for and reported safe, and fire crews continued to combat the blaze while investigators worked to determine its cause.
