Florian Wellbrock clinches 5km gold to complete open-water double at European Champs

German swimmer Florian Wellbrock added a 5-kilometre title to his earlier 10km win, securing a double at the European championships in Paris.

Wellbrock dominated the 5km race on the River Seine, fending off a late surge by Hungary's David Bethlehem, who took silver. Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri earned the bronze. The victory follows Wellbrock's earlier 10km triumph and mirrors his previous world-championship doubles. He has now amassed five European medals, three of them gold, and announced he will skip the upcoming pool events in Paris.

Why it matters

Wellbrock's double underscores his dominance in open-water swimming and adds to Germany's medal tally at a major continental meet.
