Florida health officials alert Palm Beach County after local dengue case

The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County issued a mosquito-borne disease advisory after confirming a locally acquired dengue fever infection.

After verifying a locally transmitted dengue fever infection, the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County announced an advisory targeting mosquito-borne illnesses. Dengue typically presents with high fever, intense muscle and joint aches, headaches and sometimes a rash, appearing within two weeks of a mosquito bite, and while rarely fatal, it can be highly uncomfortable. The health agency advised the public to eliminate standing water sources such as flower pots, gutters, bird baths and discarded tires, and to apply EPA-approved repellents while wearing protective clothing.

Residents were also encouraged to repair window and door screens and use air conditioning when possible. Palm Beach County Mosquito Control is coordinating surveillance and control measures in the affected area, and the department maintains statewide monitoring for diseases like West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis and chikungunya. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact local health officials or a medical provider.
