Florida mail carrier arrested after hoarding over 100 cats and dogs in filthy home

A 77-year-old postal worker in Stuart, Florida, was taken into custody after investigators uncovered more than 100 animals kept in unsanitary cages inside her house.

Authorities arrested 77-year-old mail carrier Gail Giustino on July 20 after a raid on her Stuart residence revealed more than 100 cats and small dogs confined in cages amid piles of feces and urine. Sheriff John Budensiek described the interior as unbearably hot, with a foot of solid waste that had to be broken away to move the animals. Giustino, who has been cited dozens of times since 2014 for similar violations, was charged with a single misdemeanor count of animal cruelty and one of illegal confinement, then released on a $50,000 bond.

The Humane Society of Treasure Coast took in 108 rescued animals, many in critical condition, and has begun reuniting some with grateful owners while preparing the rest for adoption. Staff members reported emotional strain but noted signs of recovery among the cats and dogs, and community volunteers have offered support and adoption interest. Officials hope the case will also prompt mental-health treatment for Giustino.
