Former Australian envoy says ties with China remain fragile and at risk

Graham Fletcher, who previously served as Australia’s ambassador to China, warned that the bilateral relationship is still vulnerable after Canberra quietly turned down Chinese proposals on infrastructure and AI cooperation.

In a recent briefing, former ambassador Graham Fletcher said the Australian government had silently rejected Chinese overtures to deepen collaboration in infrastructure projects and artificial-intelligence initiatives. He argued that the two nations are unlikely to become close partners because they hold fundamentally different ideas about regional order. Fletcher cautioned that the already strained ties could slip further into a downward trajectory.
