Former homeless realtor leads volunteer drive to refurbish twenty vacant Canberra public homes

After experiencing homelessness, real-estate professional Jonny Warren is campaigning for the ACT government to authorize the refurbishment of twenty vacant public-housing properties in Canberra as a volunteer project. The initiative, aimed at completing work by Christmas, would involve tasks such as cleaning, painting, carpet installation and plumbing upgrades, with a roster of tradespeople already on standby. Warren’s proposal follows a personal encounter with a mother and child sleeping in a car, which reinforced his commitment to the cause.

Independent MLA Thomas Emerson supports the scheme and urges the government to collaborate, noting the contrast between hundreds of empty units and a long waiting list of applicants. Housing All Australians ACT chair Jo Farrell welcomes the effort but cautions that renovations must meet standards of dignity and quality. ACT Shelter’s Corinne Dobson says the project could offer hope to those waiting years for housing, though she stresses it is not a substitute for systemic reforms.
