Former Manchester United star Mark Hughes mourns son Alex, who died of sudden adult death syndrome

Alex Hughes, aged 38, was discovered collapsed at his Macclesfield residence on 19 June by his two sons and died despite paramedic efforts, according to a coroner’s inquest. The investigation identified sudden adult death syndrome as the cause, a condition in which a structurally normal heart experiences a fatal rhythm disturbance, often linked to inherited factors. Mark Hughes, a former Manchester United forward, and his wife Jill said they were “totally heartbroken” by the unexpected loss of their son.

Alex had a brief playing stint with Stockport and Wrexham before moving into recruitment roles at clubs such as Grimsby Town, Manchester City, and others, and was described by colleagues as a well-liked professional. The British Heart Foundation noted that about 500 UK residents are affected by SADS each year. Grimsby Town head coach David Artell called Alex “just such a good guy,” lamenting the cruelty of life. The family’s statement highlighted Alex’s roles as husband to Jessica and father to children Sebastian and Leonardo.
