Former NMSU star wanted after skipping sexual assault trial while abroad

Deshawndre Washington, a former New Mexico State University basketball player, missed his Las Cruces sexual assault trial and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

A New Mexico judge issued a bench warrant for former NMSU basketball player Deshawndre Washington after he did not show up for the start of his sexual assault trial in Las Cruces on August 3. Washington is charged with fifteen offenses stemming from a hazing incident that allegedly involved sexual assault of teammates and student managers during the 2022-23 season. While awaiting trial on bond, he was permitted to play professional basketball overseas, first in Dubai and most recently for Lebanon's Sagesse Club.

The court indicated he will be arrested on a no-hold bond and, if not taken into custody in Doña Ana County, will be extradited to New Mexico. Judge Conrad Perea also imposed a gag order preventing participants and attorneys from discussing the case publicly. Management group The Crew Management claimed travel difficulties due to Middle-East conflicts delayed Washington’s return, and the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon confirmed plans for him to travel back on August 4.
