Former NYC sanitation chief arrested for possessing thousands of child porn images

Victor Alvelo, 61, who retired in 2025 after serving as a General Superintendent of the New York City Department of Sanitation, was arrested on Tuesday on a single count of possessing child pornography. Investigators traced illicit file-sharing to an IP address at his Bronx house and obtained a warrant, during which they discovered a flash drive in the front pocket of a DSNY jacket containing 154 illegal images and videos, along with personal and work documents.

Further child-exploitation files were found on a computer hard drive in his home office. HSI New York Acting Special Agent in Charge Pete Gizas said Alvelo betrayed public trust by using city-branded apparel to hide the material. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department will continue to pursue offenders and thanked the NYPD Computer Crimes Squad and partner agencies for the breakthrough. Alvelo faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
