Former trainees allege rape and harassment at Army Foundation College in Harrogate
Four women say they were sexually assaulted or harassed while training as 17-year-old junior soldiers at the Army Foundation College, including one who describes a prolonged rape by fellow trainees.
Four women who attended the Army Foundation College in Harrogate between 2018 and 2025 have told one outlet they suffered sexual assault or harassment as 17-year-old junior soldiers, one describing a rape by several peers that lasted hours. North Yorkshire Police logged 16 sexual-offence reports linked to the college in the year to June, while Ministry of Defence records indicate 176 complaints of inappropriate sexual behaviour from January 2018 to June 2025, the majority involving junior soldiers.
The Army described the allegations as extremely distressing and serious and pointed to reforms such as the Defence Serious Crime Command to aid victims. Convictions of former instructors for sexual offences have raised questions about the college’s culture. Labour defence committee member Emma Lewell urged an urgent independent inquiry, and a recent visit by the Children’s Commissioner reportedly found confidence among junior soldiers in raising concerns. The college, which trains all 16-year-old Army recruits, currently has 70 female junior soldiers out of 889 total.
