Foster caregiver builds makeshift wheelchair for tiny injured kitten

A stray kitten named Gelato was rescued and taken to Cincinnati Animal Care, where he was diagnosed with a spinal injury that left his back legs atrophied. Because existing animal wheelchairs were too large, veterinary assistant Mallory Smith fashioned a custom aid from Hot Wheels toy ambulances, zip ties, duct tape and inexpensive wooden rulers. The makeshift device enabled Gelato to travel and undergo physiotherapy, gaining internet fame in the process.

Recognizing its temporary nature, Smith collaborated with an engineer to produce an adjustable 3D-printed wheelchair that grows with the kitten. Ongoing therapy shows Gelato beginning to stand unaided, though he still cannot take many steps. Smith hopes Gellet’s story highlights the need for more varied assistive devices for special-needs animals.
