French-Swiss team tests AI-powered smart bra for early breast-cancer detection

Researchers from France and Switzerland are evaluating a wearable smart bra that combines thermal imaging, electrical impedance and AI to identify early signs of breast cancer.

A collaborative French-Swiss research group has created the PHI-BRA smart bra, a non-invasive device worn for roughly half an hour that captures breast-surface thermography and electrical impedance spectroscopy. Temperature rises may signal increased blood flow from a developing tumor, while impedance data reflect differences in cellular structure; both are processed by AI algorithms that can flag suspicious patterns and accommodate measurement uncertainty.

Although it does not replace mammography, the bra could serve as a more accessible interim screening tool, addressing the rise in metastatic breast cancer among women under 40. The effort builds on prior wearable concepts, such as an MIT-engineered ultrasound-bra that detected sub-centimeter cysts. Researchers are currently conducting clinical trials and aim to expand the platform for broader use, though consumer availability remains several years away.
