Friends suspect post-sepsis issues behind Perez Hilton’s livestreamed self-harm

Authorities responded to multiple calls reporting that Perez Hilton was livestreaming self-harm from his Miami residence, safely removing him and providing medical care. The 48-year-old entertainer had endured a severe sepsis infection earlier this year, spending three weeks in the hospital and later undergoing emergency surgery for a large blood clot. Friends close to Hilton worry that the trauma of the infection may have contributed to a post-sepsis psychiatric condition, a concern echoed by clinical psychologist Andrew Mendonsa, who noted that up to half of sepsis survivors experience lasting psychological effects.

Mendonsa stressed that without a personal evaluation, it is impossible to attribute the self-harm episode solely to the prior illness. Hilton’s family, including his three children—Mario, 13; Mia, 11; and Mayte, 8—escaped the home just before the incident to shield them from further distress. Police and mental-health professionals from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Crisis Response Unit remain involved, offering support to the family as Hilton seeks help.
